Tolerance: The Silent and Non-Violent Weapon

By Humberto Chavez

Are new generations more tolerant with social problems than the old ones? Apparently, this is true because schools provide the necessary education not only to solve some problems related to sexual and racial discrimination but also tools or skill to create a tolerant society. Instead old generations were guided by prejudice and discrimination; they didn’t take time to learn about the members of a specific culture or sexual minority. For example, you are a thirty-year-old person and heard about a friend of your child’s being homosexual or bisexual, what’s your reaction? Obviously you get shocked, but your own child teaches you how to manage this situation and confer the support that he/she gave it to his/her friend. Also you can ask a group of kids between fourteen and seventeen years old and they provide you a strong point of view and respect for these people. If you ask them who taught you this? Some of them will say “our teachers at school”. Tolerance is the most peaceful weapon for our future; we should know how to use it to create a stable and conscious society.
